Louisa Seton

Louisa Seton was raised in Nairobi, Kenya. From an early age she explored remote parts of the country, flying along side her father in his light aircraft. Growing up in such rich cultural surroundings imprinted in her a great respect for the peoples she encountered and inspired a deep appreciation of the beauty of nature. "I had an incredibly free childhood. Growing up in a developing country I witnessed poverty, chaos and crime but it never took away from the magic that Kenya and its’ people seem to radiate.
Whenever I get the opportunity to go back I always go on a mission with my Dad mainly to Northern Kenya which is quite a remote desolate part of the country. It’s here that I’ve photographed a majority of my African tribal portraits namely: the El Molo, Turkana, Rendille and Gabbra. The further north you are or closer to Eithiopian border you get the less influence of westernization so their tribal culture has been more or less protected."

Turkana

“I always had a passion for photography but nothing reveals my love of the art as my images of the tribal clans. I can never sincerely convey the raw beauty and timeless nobility of these fascinating people, fortunately I was able to spend time amongst them and hopefully my portraits capture something of the essence of their spirits. I don’t pretend that I can truly do them justice however to me they remain powerful and lasting images of a world almost forgotten. A huge body of my fine art work consists of Tribal African portraits. The plan, one day, is to have a coffee table book of tribal images.”

“Believe in yourself and your ability to succeed at anything you want to do”

“Striking and often raw, rugged landscapes filled with intense colour mapped the start of my love affair with images. Since I was a child the elegant tribal peoples surviving on the land always filled me with admiration, an admiration that eventually led me to photograph their amazing form. I felt a great need to capture the essence of these majestic peoples before Western influences eroded away a pureness in their lives and culture.”

Louisa studied Fine Art at Rhodes University, South Africa, majoring in Photography. It was here, with her faithful Nikon FM2, that she explored her passion further. After leaving Uni, she worked in London for 4 years and staged her first solo exhibition in 2000. It was a success and led to her founding “LS images” where she started selling her prints as Fine Art works. During that time she traveled to Brazil on assignment for Wonderlust magazine after winning the “Face to Face” Travel photographer of the Year competition(3000 entrants). As well as to South America on a separate 3month trip and to South East Asia.
Louisa left London for Australia 3 years ago and is now happily based in Sydney. "Sydney is one of 2 cities I am infatuated with, I feel incredibly happy living here. Cape town is the other."

A few years ago Louisa set up LSimages in Sydney and it has been a great success so far with 2 solo exhibitions and 3 joint exhibits in Sydney galleries. "I knew my career as a Fine Art photographer had been launched when a Sydney based collector bought my entire exhibition. It’s taken a lot of time and effort but things are beginning to happen. I have started doing weddings on the side for extra cash and you never know one day the dream to be a sought after travel documentary photographer with a book under my belt may not be too far down the track."
